Haverfordwest County midfielder Clayton Green is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury. The 28-year-old, who joined the Bluebirds this summer, has confirmed he will be out of action until at least November.
Green suffered a medial ligament injury in his knee and has already missed the club's last five Cymru Premier matches. He was spotted wearing a brace during a half-time interview with Sioned Dafydd of Sgorio during Haverfordwest's recent match against Briton Ferry Llansawel. The Wales C international has made just two appearances for his new club since signing, featuring in defeats to The New Saints and his former side Penybont back in August.
Recovery timeline set
Speaking about the setback, Green outlined a clear recovery schedule. "I’ve done a month now," he said. "I’m looking at another two months’ recovery time till I’m back on the pitch." This timeline points to a potential return in mid-to-late November. The earliest possible fixture for his comeback could be the away trip to face Penybont at the Dragon Bet Stadium on November 20. That match would carry extra significance for Green, who spent the previous season with the Bridgend-based club.
International pedigree
Green's absence is a blow for manager Tony Pennock, as the midfielder brings valuable experience. He has won four caps for Wales C and captained the side in their memorable victory over England in March 2024. His familiarity with several teammates, having known Ben Ahmun and Corey Shepard from their time at Pontypridd United and Kyle McCarthy from the Wales C setup, was expected to help his integration. He also previously played alongside Rhys Abbruzzese at Barry Town United.
County's current form
While Green recuperates, Haverfordwest County will look to maintain their momentum in the league. The Bluebirds' upcoming schedule after the Penybont clash includes home games against Connah’s Quay Nomads on November 27 and Caernarfon Town on December 5. Green expressed hope for the team's position upon his return. "Hopefully we can keep moving up the table and put us in a good position for when I’m back in two months, and keep progressing," he added.
His former club, Penybont, are faring well without him, currently sitting fourth in the Cymru Premier with 18 points from eight games. They are on a five-match unbeaten run, with form reading three wins and two draws from their last five outings. Their next challenge is an away fixture against Cardiff MET on October 30. For Green, the focus is on a diligent rehabilitation with the target of a November return firmly in sight.
