Penybont Football Club has scored a hat-trick with the recruitment of triplets Ben, Matthew, and Robert Symons. The 17-year-old brothers from Sarn are quickly making a name for themselves in the Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Reserve Division. Last Saturday, they all played against Cardiff Corries at The Riverside in Radyr, with striker Matthew netting in a 7-0 win. The triplets previously posed recognition problems for managers and match officials through the junior ranks at The Kymco Stadium. Robert suffered a shoulder injury seven years ago while playing Rugby League, leading to the three brothers switching to football. They have divided loyalties when it comes to who they support, with Ben a Chelsea fan, Matthew supporting Liverpool, and Robert gunning for Arsenal. But they all come together on weekends to play for Bont, with Ben at right-back, Matthew playing up front, and Robert a tricky left winger. Penybont FC chairman Emlyn Phillips said the three boys are a credit to their parents Brian and Jayne, and the club is delighted to have them on board. The Symons triplets are not the first to take to the pitch for the same football team, but their unique dynamic is generating plenty of banter regarding identification problems. The triplets are studying or attending school, with Matthew and Ben taking BTEC Sport at Bridgend College in Pencoed, and Robert a sixth-form pupil at Brynteg Comprehensive School. They are united on the pitch, and their passion for football is evident in their play. The triplets' switch to football was a departure from their family's rugby background, with their father Brian a former Bryncethin scrum-half, and their older brother Joseph playing for Bridgend Blue Bulls and a Welsh Rugby League U18 international.
