Penybont reached the JD Cymru Premier European Play-Off Final following a penalty shootout win over Colwyn Bay at the Blue Turtle Arena. With so much on the line on the north Wales coast, it was a nervy affair which finished goalless before Bont triumphed from the spot – despite boss Rhys Griffiths describing his side as ‘by far outsiders’ for the Play-Offs last week. Chances were at a minimum in the first half, with both sides getting most joy through crosses into the box. Aeron Edwards couldn’t quite meet Jordan Davies’ flashed delivery for Bay, while Nathan Wood’s header from Mael Davies’ lofted ball was straight down the throat of Seagulls goalkeeper Alex Brown at the other end. The game continued in a similar fashion after the break, with Bont’s best opportunity of the second half coming when Ethan Cann’s cross was met by a Chris Venables header which again was easily saved by Brown. Bay’s best chance came in the final 10 minutes when Davies stung the palms of Luke Armstrong with a fierce volley, before the Seagulls almost won the tie with the last kick in stoppage time when a scramble in the box saw the ball break for Jamie Cumming but he fired wide. The penalty shootout started in faultless fashion, with Venables, Wood and Owen Pritchard all scoring for Penybont and Aaron Williams and George Hughes both finding the net for Colwyn Bay. However, the Seagulls slipped up with their third attempt as Davies was denied by a strong Armstrong save low to the goalkeeper’s right. That proved to be decisive, as Noah Daley and Lewis Sirrell scored for either side, before Clayton Green stepped up to coolly slot home the winner for Bont. Remarkably, Rhys Griffiths’ side have still not won a match in 90 minutes since New Year’s Day but are now just one game away from a third European adventure in the space of four seasons. The Play-Off Final will see Penybont meet the winner of Sunday’s Semi-Final between Barry Town United and Haverfordwest County, at the home ground of the team who finished higher in the league.
